Album „Chip Chrome & The Mono-Tones” to moment całkowitej transformacji zespołu w tytułowych bohaterów, z Jessem Rutherfordem zmieniającym się w Chipa Chrome’a i resztą grupy wchodzącą w rolę The Mono-Tones. Pomysł na ten zabieg wziął się z teledysku z 2019 roku „Middle of Somewhere” i jest nową forma ewolucji artystycznej The Neighbourhood.

Chip Chrome and The Mono-Tones pojawili się pierwszy raz w teledysku do „Middle of Somewhere” i szybko stali się szansą na ewolucję zespołu w kierunku nowych brzmień oraz dla poszukiwań nowych inspiracji artystycznych.

– Singiel „Sweater Weather” okazał się ogromny sukcesem, ale od tego czasu ciągle myślałem „Jak możemy to powtórzyć?” – przyznaje Jesse – „Nie chciałem robić niczego w tym samym stylu, chciałem stworzyć coś zupełnie nowego. Mieliśmy zrobić teledysk do „Middle of Somewhere”. Przyszedłem wtedy na plan cały w srebrnej farbie! Ku mojemu zdziwieniu, zespołowi spodobało się, jak głupkowato i interesująco wyglądam. Chip to dla mnie sposób na powiedzenie: Będę sobą, nie możecie mnie powstrzymać!”

W 2020 roku Jessie w pełni przemienił się w Chipa. Jak mówi: „Chip wydostał się z internetu, wziął gitarę. Grał na niej aż palce zaczęły mu krwawić i nauczył się, jak tworzyć utwory w nowy sposób.”
