To tradycyjne wydarzenie od 1 stycznia 1941 roku traktowane jest jako oficjalna inauguracja światowego roku muzycznego. Dzięki transmisjom radiowym i telewizyjnym koncert dociera do odbiorców w 90 krajach świata.

W 2024 roku do zadyrygowania orkiestrą Wiedeńskich Filharmoników zaproszony został ponownie jeden z największych współczesnych dyrygentów niemieckich Christian Thielemann - Współpraca artystyczna między Filharmonikami Wiedeńskimi a Christianem Thielemannem rozpoczęła się w 2000 roku. W 2019 roku Thielemann po raz pierwszy stanął na podium podczas koncertu noworocznego Filharmoników Wiedeńskich i od tego czasu dyryguje orkiestrą podczas koncertów abonamentowych w wiedeńskim Musikverein, na Festiwalu w Salzburgu oraz podczas tournée po Japonii, Chinach, Europie i Stanach Zjednoczonych.

Po wydaniu, doskonale przyjętego cyklu symfonii Beethovena, Thielemann i Filharmonicy Wiedeńscy rozpoczęli nagrywanie kompletu symfonii Brucknera. W jubileuszowym, 2024 roku Brucknera, kompletny zestaw 11 symfonii ukaże się po raz pierwszy w fonograficznej historii orkiestry.
