W rzymskiej klinice 6 czerwca o szóstej rano przychodzi na świat martwe dziecko. Ojciec, amerykański dyplomata Robert Thom (Gregory Peck), jest pogrążony w głębokim smutku. Obawia się o stan psychiczny Katherine (Lee Remick), która tak bardzo pragnęła dać mu potomka.
