Kierunek w lingwistyce zapoczątkowany przez Szwajcara F. de Saussure´a na początku XX wieku. Wydane pośmiertnie jego wykłady uniwersyteckie pt. Kurs językoznawstwa ogólnego do dziś stanowią wykładnię strukturalizmu, kierunku kontynuowanego w dwudziestowiecznych naukach humanistycznych do czasów dzisiejszych, mimo licznych modyfikacji. U podstaw teorii de Saussure´a leży przekonanie, że badanie języka należy poprzedzić stworzeniem jego modelu, tj. hipotezy dotyczącej istoty języka w ogóle. W modelu strukturalistycznym na język składają się: langue (język) i parole (mówienie). Langue to byt abstrakcyjny i społeczny, który istnieje w świadomości zbiorowej w postaci sumy języków obecnych w świadomości każdego członka danego społeczeństwa. Jest bytem w miarę trwałym - zmiany zachodzą w nim wolno, ewolucyjnie. Jest on systemem znaków. Parole natomiast to konkretne (w przeciwieństwie do abstrakcyjnego systemu), jednostkowe (w przeciwieństwie do społecznego systemu) i momentalne (w przeciwieństwie do trwałego systemu) teksty wytworzone w danym języku.
