Zainspirowany XX-wiecznym Nowym Jorkiem krążek powstawał w każdym zakątku świata – od Manhattanu, przez Los Angeles i Londyn, aż po Tokio. Produkcją zajęli się Koenig i długoletni współpracownik zespołu Ariel Rechtshaid. Album zmiksował Dave Fridmann, a mastering to dzieło Emily Lazar. Zespół podzielił się świetnym zwiastunem albumu.

Początki albumu „Only God Was Above Us” sięgają lat 2019-2020, kiedy to Koenig napisał większość tekstów. 10-utworowy album jest efektem pięciu lat spędzonych na dopracowywaniu, przerabianiu i stopniowym kształtowaniu tekstów i melodii. Tym samym Vampire Weekend dotarli na zupełnie nowy szczyt kreatywności.

„Only God Was Above Us” to pierwsze pełne wydawnictwo Vampire Weekend od „Father of the Bride” z 2019 roku, który był ich trzecim z rzędu albumem #1 na liście Billboard 200. Nominowany do Grammy w kategorii Album roku, krążek zdobył nagrodę dla Najlepszego albumu alternatywnego – było to drugie zwycięstwo zespołu w tej kategorii.
