Koncert Noworoczny z Wiednia jest jednym z najstarszych i najbardziej spektakularnych wydarzeń muzycznych w roku. W swojej ponad siedemdziesięcio-letniej historii orkiestrę prowadziło wielu najwybitniejszych dyrygentów na świecie. To tradycyjne wydarzenie od 1 stycznia 1941 roku traktowane jest jako oficjalna inauguracja światowego roku muzycznego. Dzięki transmisjom radiowym i telewizyjnym koncert dociera do odbiorców w 90 krajach świata.

W 2021 roku do zadyrygowania orkiestrą Wiedeńskich Filharmoników ponownie zaproszony został jeden z największych dyrygentów włoskich drugiej połowy XX wieku – Riccardo Muti. Studiował w Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella. W 1967 na konkursie dla młodych dyrygentów im. Guido Cantelliego w Mediolanie otrzymał pierwszą nagrodę. Rok później został głównym dyrygentem Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, pozostając nim do 1980. W 1971 Herbert von Karajan zaprosił go do udziału w Festiwalu Salzburgskim, z którym następnie współpracował do 2001.

W latach 1972-1982 był głównym dyrygentem londyńskiej Philharmonia Orchestra, obejmując stanowisko po Otto Klempererze. W latach 1980-1992 pełnił funkcję dyrektora muzycznego Orkiestry Filadelfijskiej, będąc następcą Eugene'a Ormandy'ego.
