Zespół tworzą Jesse Rutherford (wokal), Jeremy Freedman (gitara), Zach Abels (gitara), Mikey Margott (bas) i Brandon Fried (perkusja). Grupa przyjaciół z okolic Newbury Park w Thousand Oaks w Kalifornii w 2011 roku postanowiła założyć zespół. Ich debiutancki album z 2013 roku – "I Love You" – oraz podwójnie platynowy singiel "Sweater Weather" zapewnił im miejsce na szczytach popowych i alternatywnych list przebojów.
"Sweater Weather" był jednym z największych singli 2013 roku. Zespół wyprzedał koncerty w Stanach Zjednoczonych, Europie i Rosji. Mixtape "#000000 & #FFFFFF", nagrany z artystami ze świata rapu (m.in. YG, Raury, Danny Brown, Dej Loaf, French Montana, Casey Veggies), potwierdził, że The Neighbourhood nie są tylko zwykłym rockowych zespołem, a drugi album – "Wiped Out!" – pełen rocka inspirowanego r&b, pokazał, jak powinien brzmieć rock w XXI wieku.
