Album „Shapeshifting” to koprodukcja Satrianiego oraz Jima Scotta (Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) z ich wieloletnim współpracownikiem Johnem Cunibertim, który zajął się masteringiem. Satriani zaprosił do pracy nad albumem zarówno starych, jak i nowych współpracowników. Legendarny perkusista Kenny Aronoff (John Fogerty), basista Chris Chaney (Jane's Addiction) i klawiszowiec Eric Caudieux to główni muzycy, których usłyszymy na płycie. Swój duży wkład wnieśli również Lisa Coleman (The Revolution) i Christopher Guest.

Z pierwszym singlem „Nineteen Eighty” w stylu retro Satriani duchowo powraca do okresu, w którym pracował ze swoim pierwszym zespołem, Squares. Pozostając wierny dźwiękom tamtych czasów, użył nawet klasycznego fazera MXR EVH.

„Zawsze byłem wielkim fanem Eddiego Van Halena” - mówi Satriani. „Moim zdaniem on właśnie skrystalizował tę epokę. Na przełomie lat 70. i 80. zachował gitarę rockową. I ja tak właśnie bym zrobił ”.

Przez dwie dekady wirtuoz gitary podróżował po świecie, grając na wyprzedanych koncertach zarówno, jako headliner, jak i członek gwiazdorskiej grupy gitarowej „G3”. Dotychczasowe nagrania studyjne i koncertowe artysty sprzedały się w ponad 10 milionach egzemplarzy na całym świecie. Z jego wielu albumów solowych dwa zyskały status platynowy, a cztery inne – złoty. Artysta otrzymał również 15 nominacji do nagrody Grammy.

Debiutancki album jego kolejnego projektu, Chickenfoot, z udziałem byłego frontmana Van Halen, Sammy'ego Hagara, basisty Michaela Anthony'ego i perkusisty Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chada Smitha pokrył się złotem.
